From Discovery to Family: My Journey as a Religious Lesbian
By Or, 28 Married to Hadas, mother to Tzuri
Growing Up Different
When I think back to my childhood and adolescence, I never had an “in-the-closet” experience. I always felt a little different, but I never realized it had to do with my sexual orientation… or perhaps I did, but I buried it deep.
Pull Quote:"During my military service, it finally clicked when I started avoiding a student with a well-known 'gay radar.'"
The Years of Fear and Discovery
The two years after my army service were all about discovery, fear, and the pain of loss. I was angry at God and couldn’t understand why I had been given this burden.
Highlighted Box:"The path through the Shvil Israel gave me a sense of freedom. By the end, I accepted myself as I am."
I wasn’t happy yet, but I was ready to explore my identity as a lesbian.
Joining Bat Kol
I joined Bat Kol, and I will never forget my first visit to Atira and Tamar’s house for a study evening. A living room filled with holy books and three sweet women appeared before me.
Pull Quote:"Suddenly, I realized that I too could build a home, with children and with God."
Soon after, I started coming out to my family and friends, even encouraging a little gossip in my synagogue. These first outings were both amazing and terrifying. Most of my loved ones supported me, which helped me feel more secure, though everyone needed time to process.
Finding a Community
When I moved to Be’er Sheva, I discovered Bat Kol South and the southern LGBTQ+ community. It wasn’t just about coming out anymore—it was about simply living my life.
Meeting Hadas
I began exploring relationships, realizing how little I knew. After several failed connections, while working on Pesach Sheni and the “Making Space” project, I met Hadas. By the time of the event, we were already together.
Pull Quote:"That same year, my two brothers married, and I was able to bring my partner to family events. There was no missing us now."
Engagement and Family Challenges
After a year together, we got engaged, which caused a small family earthquake. Not everyone could attend or offer congratulations. Yet, with patience and tears, we reached our wedding—a beautiful women’s ceremony, attended by most of our family, including three grandmothers who blessed us under the chuppah.
Parenthood
A year ago, our daughter Tzuri was born—a true miracle. She also challenges me daily to grow and improve as a mother.
Highlighted Box:"Each day with Tzuri reminds me of the responsibility and joy of nurturing our family together."
